This is an article to remember the late Prof Austen Angell (1933~2021)
Prof Angell was the guru in non-crystalline solid materials, an authority in glass-transition phenomenon.
His brief and tangential interest in battery electrolytes in 1990s discovered the abnormal ion-solvation behavior at high concentrations, which is the ancestor of “super-concentration” concept that is still inspiring researchers today.
He educated a few students, who are playing leading roles in DOE’s major programs (K. Xu in JCESR, W. Xu in Battery500) in developing new electrolytes.
