Strategy of the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research to Influence Laboratory Safety Among its Funded Researchers

JCESR partners collaborate to positively influence safe science performed by JCESR funded researchers. JCESR supports the sites’ safety cultures by encouraging researchers to always be engaged and fully understand all the physical and health hazards of the tasks they perform, implement hazard control methods, and receive training appropriate to the hazards involved.

Scientific Achievement

JCESR strives to influence safe science among its researchers.

Significance and Impact

JCESR requires researchers to work safely as part of an ongoing safety culture. No injuries, illness or incidents have occurred in benchtop research associated with JCESR projects in the past 14 months.

Research Details

JCESR Operations works to foster JCESR’s safety culture with these six environmental, safety and health (ESH) programs:

  • Safety Culture: Site visits and other initiatives supported by JCESR Director to foster safe practices
  • Hazard Identification: Hazard and Training Assessment to identify hazards and mitigate risk
  • Training: Declaration by researchers of training received and identification of additional training needs
  • Preparedness and Risk Reduction: Inspection of labs to identify emergency response preparedness
  • Incident Reporting: Reporting and investigating incidents involving JCESR researchers
  • Lessons Learned: Sharing lessons learned with JCESR partners and funded collaborators

Work performed at Argonne National Laboratory (JCESR managing partner) by Rupkey, S. in partnership with ESH managers at all partner and funded collaborator sites, J. Chem. Health Safety (2015).
